Then, in the top of the seventh inning, Dartmouth plated five runs to take a 14-10 lead, only to have the Beavers rally with four runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Traveling to New London, Conn., the Beavers lose a couple of squeakers to Coast Guard, 4-3 and 6-5. The second-game loss was especially tough, as OF Bruce Hancock walloped what appeared to be a ninth-inning one-out two-run homer for a 7-6 Babson lead, only to have the umpires say it bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double. With the tying run on third and the lead run on second, the next two hitters hit infield pops to close out the game.

Joining Cirrone in the big-hit parade was DH Tony Casto, who banged out a solo homer, a two-bagger, and two singles, good for four RBI. He also scored three runs. 1B Dave DiGangi made a strong contribution with two hits and three runs scored. Despite what locals claimed was one of the longest homers ever hit at the WPI field, it did not prevent Babson skipper and third base coach Frank Millerick from greeting Cirrone on his home run trot with "Nice shot, enjoy it...you're on the bench for game two." It was a promise the skipper made good on.

With one out, C Greg Foster shot a line single to left and 2B Scott MacCausland walked.  Paul Flaherty was sent up to pinch-hit, and he promptly delivered a two-run double on the first pitch, closing the gap to 8-7. After a strikeout for the second out, the stage was set for Bono to work his heroics. On a 2-2 pitch, the diminutive outfielder blasted a line-drive homer to dead rightfield, giving the Beavers a 9-8 win, and setting off a wild celebration at home plate.
