Memorable Moments in Beaver
Baseball

May 1, 1996
3B Jeremy Bock, C Greg Foster, P Sammy Kilpatrick, and 2B Scott MacCausland
named all-conference. Kilpatrick is also named conference Player-of-the-Year.
May 1, 1999
WNEC scores the winning run in the bottom of the 15th inning to defeat the
Beavers, 14-13, in the longest game in Babson baseball history. P Eric Asen took
the loss, despite hurling seven innings of two-hit ball. Coach Frank Millerick
watched the final eight innings from a park bench beyond the RF fence, after getting
tossed for beefing on a play at the plate in the seventh inning that resulted in
a WNEC run. Millerick had company for six innings in the person of C Steven
McMann, who was banished for arguing a call in the ninth inning.
May 1, 2001
P Billy Fitzgerald, 1B Dave Millman, and OF Mike Santora named all-conference.
May 1, 2002
Deciding to enlist in the Army, Mike Reed announces his resignation as head
coach, after one year at the helm. Ten days later, Reed guides the Beavers to
the ECAC championship. Coach Reed's abbreviated tenure resulted in a 27-19
(.587) record, the most single-season wins by a Babson baseball team.
May 2, 2000
OF Pat Cutter and DH Dave Millman named all-conference. For Millman, it is the
third year in a row he has made the team, as well as the third position on the
team, previously making it as an OF and 1B.
May 2, 2005
C Teddy Dziuba named all-conference.
May 3, 1997
In the regular-season finale, Alex Frick tossed a complete-game gem, as the
Beavers belted powerhouse Bentley, 8-2. It was Babson's 20th victory of the
season. The crafty southpaw yielded a lead-off homer in the first inning, then
limited the Falcons to three hits the rest of the way, while striking out 7 and
walking 2. LF Jon Cignetti and DH Eric Previte powered the offense, each with
two doubles and three RBI. Patrick O'Quinn had three hits on the day.
May 5, 1974
Bill Olson, the first head coach of Babson baseball, officially steps down,
after announcing back in February that the 1974 season would be his final
campaign as Beaver skipper. Olson's six-year record stands at 23-42 (.354).
Olson served as Athletics Director and head coach of basketball during his
entire tenure as baseball coach.
May 8, 1996
SS Patrick O'Quinn elected captain of the 1997 Babson baseball team.
May 9, 1988
Gary Stockbridge resigns after six years as head coach, following a fifth
consecutive losing season. His overall record stands at 49-74 (.390).
May 9, 1988
Babson defeats Tufts, 7-6, in the ECAC championship game to claim its first
post-season title. The winning run came in the top of the ninth inning, courtesy
of a Steven McMann opposite-field home run. Babson beat Wesleyan, 7-6, in the
quarterfinal round and Salem State, 7-0, in the semifinal round, before beating
the Jumbos in the title game at Medford.
May 10, 1991
In its first post-season appearance, Babson loses a 12-inning heartbreaker to
Salem State, 7-6, in the first round of the ECAC tournament. Salem State's
winning run was hotly contested to no avail by Coaches Paul Donato and Frank
Millerick and the entire Beaver squad. With the score 6-6, runners on first and
third with one out, the Salem State hitter drove a shot down the rightfield
line. RF Glenn Allard made a spectacular running catch, and in one motion
wheeled and fired a bullet to 1B Dave Zaslaw to nail the runner on first, who
was running when the ball was hit and was now retreating to the bag following
the catch. The umpires claimed the runner from third crossed the plate before
the putout was made at first base. Videotape of the play showed clearly that the
putout was made at first base before the runner crossed home plate and the run
should not have been counted...but the umpire's word is final.
May 11, 2002
Babson claims its second ECAC championship with an 8-3 victory over Western New
England College. Earlier in the day, the Beavers staged a come-from-behind rally
to carry them past Endicott, 10-9. In that game, SS Kevin Higa had three hits,
walloped a grand slam, and had seven RBI, the latter a new Babson single-game
standard. On the first day of the tournament, Babson had defeated Castleton
State, 9-3.
